How to Choose Tiles for Kitchen and Bathroom Projects

Confession: Hardware isn't the only interior design detail that you need to be placing more  emphasis on. Tiles are a pretty mega consideration, too.

That's why we've joined forced with Otto Tiles, the East London-based tile and design specialist, to explore how our complementary products can be styled together to nail some of the emerging interiors trends of the moment 📈

We sat down with its founder, Damla Turgut, to get the full scoop on how to select tiles for your renovation projects.

Picking perfect tiles: What to consider 💭

Selecting the perfect tiles for your kitchen or bathroom means considering both practicality and style. These spaces aren't just functional — they're where we unwind, entertain and create memories. So your tile choices should reflect both durability needs and your design personality.

Encaustic cement tiles offer bold patterns and rich colour, perfect for making a statement. Whereas terrazzo tiles bring a timeless, speckled charm with incredible durability. Or for a touch of artisanal beauty, handcrafted zellige tiles provide a unique, glossy texture that adds warmth and character.

Kitchens and bathrooms are high-traffic zones. Floors need tough, slip-resistant tiles to handle spills and splashes. Think encaustic cement for its durability and grip. They require sealing, but reward you with bold designs. Terrazzo tiles offer both strength and charm, plus they're easy to maintain and hide imperfections well.

For walls, zellige tiles let texture and shine steal the show. They're low maintenance, but can require gentle cleaning to preserve their handmade beauty.

Your tiles should tell your story 📖 Light, neutral tones can make small rooms feel airy, while bold colours and patterns can create a striking feature. Play with textures and layouts to evoke moods for example; a calming spa vibe or a lively kitchen hub.

Tiles for Walls vs. Floors

Floor tiles must be durable and slip-resistant. Encaustic cement and terrazzo tiles are ideal, since they’re tough in texture and so offer natural grip.

Walls can handle more decorative choices, so here’s your chance to have fun ✨ Zellige tiles are perfect for kitchen backsplashes or bathroom walls, as their glossy glaze resists stains and adds artisanal texture.

Zellige Tiles: Are they here to stay? 🔶

Zellige tiles are certainly here to stay. They charm us with their handcrafted texture and organic feel, and we've seen them soar in popularity year-on-year. Whilst muted colours will always be favourites, we predict more adventurous use of colour and patterned zellige formations in 2025.

An eye for pattern 👁️

Herringbone will continue to reign supreme in patterned tiling, but basketweave patterns are stepping up for those craving a fresh twist. Creative layouts can breathe life into classic designs.

Read-up on the Storybook trend 📚

The English Storybook trend brings enchanting, cottage-inspired charm into modern homes. Cosy, whimsical spaces filled with personality. Tiles can play a key role in achieving this look...

For your floors, try a classic checkerboard design in muted tones, delicate floral encaustic patterns, or classic striped cement tiles to add a playful twist to entryways or kitchens, echoing the charm of old English country houses.

For walls, go for soft-hued zellige backsplashes which create a beautiful ambiance. Pair them with vintage fixtures, rustic woods and dainty textile designs for a space that feels both magical and inviting.

Invest for longevity 🫰

Tiles are truly the foundation of a room design. Not only do they set the tone of a space, they endure daily wear. High-quality tiles promise longevity, meaning you won’t face the headache of replacing them after installing furniture or fixtures.

Handmade tiles like zellige, or custom terrazzo, offer depth and character that mass-produced options simply can't replicate. If you appreciate craftsmanship and timeless beauty, they’re well worth the investment. Start with a solid, beautiful base, and the rest of your design can effortlessly fall into place.
